About

  • Penned is a family friendly animal themed card game for 2 to 4 players.
  • Each game normally lasts around 5 to 15 minutes.

Card Colours

  • The game card are all colour coded to made it easier for you to make decision about what card you should keep, discard and use.
  • Blue cards can be played on your turn.
  • Green cards can be used when other player try to do something to you. Green cards cannot be played on your turn.

The Winner

    The first player to have a sheep in every one of their pens is the winner (3 sheep).

    Setup

    1) Give each player 3 Sheep Pens

    • Remove all the Sheep Pen cards from the deck.
    • Give each player 3 empty Sheep Pen cards. These should be placed in front of each player with the empty pen side face up so that everyone can see them.
    • Place any unused Sheep Pen cards back in the box.

    2) Deal 5 cards & create a “Draw Pile”

    • Shuffle the remaining cards and deal 5 to each player.
    • Place the remaining cards face down between the players. This is the "Draw Pile".

    On Your Turn

    Swap a card OR play a card.

    How to Swap a Card

    • Take the top card from the Draw Pile.
    • Discard a card (face up) onto a "Discard Pile" next to the Draw Pile.
    • You can discard the card that you just picked up if you want to.
    • Your turn is now over.

    What to do if the Draw Pile Runs Out

    • If the Draw Pile runs out of cards simply turn over the Discard Pile to create a new Draw Pile.

    How to Play a Card

    • On your turn you can play a blue card from your hand.
    • You cannot play a card on your turn if you have already swapped a card.
    • Each blue card includes text that explains how to use the card.
    • At the end of your turn, discard any used cards and grab new ones from the Draw Pile so that you have 5 cards again.

    Types of Blue Card

    Blue cards are general action cards that can be played on your turn.

    ❖ Sheep Doggy Cards

    • You can play a Sheep Doggy card on your turn to herd a sheep into one of your pens.
    • To do this, simply flip over one of your empty Sheep Pen cards so that the side with a sheep in the pen is face up.
    • Discard this card and grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile. 
    • Your turn is now over.

    ❖ One-Eyed Dog Cards

    • You can play a One-Eyed Dog card on your turn to steal a sheep from another player.
    • The other player now has a chance to use a Kitty Cat card to frighten off your One-Eyed Dog. If this happens then simply discard the One-Eyed Dog card without stealing any sheep.
    • If the other player does not have a Kitty Cat then flip over one of their pens that contain a sheep to empty it. 
    • Now flip over one of your empty pens to put a sheep in it.
    • Discard this card and grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile. 
    • Your turn is now over.

    ❖ Sheep Lice Card

    • You can play a Sheep Lice card on your turn to stop another player from obtaining any more sheep.
    • Put this card face up in front of another player.
    • You cannot give this card to any player that already has Sheep Lice.
    • That player cannot use any actions that may get them another sheep until they have got rid of the Sheep Lice by playing a Sheep Dip card on their turn.
    • Discard this card and grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile. 
    • Your turn is now over.

    ❖ Sheep Dip Card

    • You can play a Sheep Dip card on your turn to get rid of Sheep Lice.
    • To do this, show the other players this card.
    • Discard this card and the face up Sheep Lice card that another player gave you.
    • Grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile.
    • Your turn is now over.

    ❖ Cakey Pig Card

    • Use this card on your turn to block another players empty pen.
    • To do this place the Cakey Pig card face up on top of any other player's empty pen card.
    • That player cannot get any sheep in that pen until they have lured the Cakey Pig out of that pen by playing a Scrummy Cupcake card.
    • You can't put a Cakey Pig card on top of a pen that already has a sheep in it.
    • You can't put a Cakey Pig card on top of a pen that already has a Cakey Pig card on it.
    • Grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile.
    • Your turn is now over.

    ❖ Scrummy Cupcake Card

    • Use this card on your turn to remove a Cakey Pig from one of your empty Sheep Pen card.
    • To do this show the other players this card.
    • Discard this card and a Cakey Pig card that has been placed on top of your empty pen.
    • Grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile.
    • Your turn is now over.

    ❖ Naughty Neddy

    • Use this card on your turn to let a sheep out of another player's pen.
    • To do this show the card to another player.
    • If they then use a Carrot on a Stick card you must simply discard this card.
    • If the other player does not have a Carrot on a Stick, turn over one of their pen cards that contains a sheep to make it empty.
    • Grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile.
    • Your turn is now over.

    Types of Green Card

    Green cards are used to respond to actions that other players take against you on their turn. You cannot use a green card on your turn.

    ❖ Kitty Cat

    • There is only one thing that the One-Eyed Dog is afraid of and that's cats (which is how he lost his eye).
    • Use this card immediately if another player tries to steal a sheep from you by playing a One-Eyed Dog card.
    • Show this card to the other player after they show you their One-Eyed Dog card.
    • The other player does not get to steal any of your sheep.
    • Grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile.

    ❖ Carrot on a Stick

    • Use this card immediately if another player tries to let out one of your sheep by playing a Naughty Neddy card.
    • Show this card to the other player after they show you their Naughty Neddy card.
    • The other player does not get to let any of your sheep out.
    • Grab a replacement card from the Draw Pile.
